Architectural Geometry (The Bentley Institute Press)

碰到Architectural Geometry (The Bentley Institute Press)一書,有些感慨。

Latest Generative Design Book Available Now - Form Geometry Structure

The Bentley Institute Press new release, Form Geometry Structure: From Nature to Design by Daniela Bertol, introduces a scientific framework for the exploration of forms in nature and design. The book probes how the natural world can provide great inspiration to the design of the man-made world by using Bentley’s GenerativeComponents to create parametric forms.

Form Geometry Structure focuses on the geometry present in every aspect of nature. Waves, clouds, leaves, seashells, and all other forms found in our physical environment follow some geometrical configuration. By understanding those forms, and the natural construction of them, architects and designers can choose the proper materials for their own works. This book looks at the underlying geometry of specific natural structures and recreates them as a digital model. Author Bertol highlights one of the forms in an excerpt from a recent blog post:

“Of the many shapes explored, I found the nautilus shell one of the most intriguing and valuable for design applications. The nautilus has a bone structure externalized in a shell, which is divided into chambers and delineated by septa. The nautilus grows and creates a new larger camera, where it moves its body and seals the previous smaller chamber with a septum. The shell shape is based on a logarithmic spiral, a geometrical configuration which remains unchanged at any scale of growth. Inspired by the nautilus for the design of a large span structure, I recreated a parametric associative model of the shell in Bentley GenerativeComponents. The digital model, although visually and formally complex, was fairly easy to generate thanks to the associative parametric software, which allowed many explorations to finally achieve the appropriate proportion and thickness of the structural ribs.”

Form Geometry Structure is beautifully illustrated and rigorously researched. While the relationship between geometry, and forces and form in nature has been explored for millennia, this book bridges the gap between art and science bringing to contemporary terms the tradition of the treatises on art and architecture.
